Secured with vision: Vista relies on Rubrik for resilient IT

In healthcare, protecting personal data is a top priority. Vista operates more than 35 locations and continues to grow; data volumes are soaring due to high-resolution imaging. With the old backup solution, it was difficult to find reliable restore points, and the system couldn’t keep pace with this growth.
Vista also faced the challenge of meeting statutory data-protection requirements. In 2019, Microsoft introduced two Azure regions in Switzerland so companies could store their data compliantly. These new regions support data-residency, compliance, and latency requirements and are designed specifically for highly regulated industries. Vista seized this opportunity to realign its backup strategy while simultaneously streamlining its IT landscape.

Rubrik Cloud Vault and NAS Cloud Direct: Images in the Cloud

Vista uses Rubrik as the central platform for backup and data management. Data is primarily backed up locally in a highly available, immutable manner, while imaging data is offloaded directly to the cloud via NAS Cloud Direct (NCD). NCD is a SaaS service from Rubrik for protecting unstructured data. It’s designed for petabyte scale, delivers up to ten times the speed of traditional NDMP backups, and unifies NAS and object data on a single platform. The solution allows billions of files to be searched quickly and restored to on-premises systems, the cloud, or alternate targets. NCD copies data from NFS, SMB, or S3 file systems directly into a local or cloud object store. With NAS Cloud Direct, Vista writes its large imaging datasets straight to the cloud - fast, efficient, and without any additional hardware investment.

Via Rubrik Cloud Vault (RCV), Vista automatically tiers backup data into multi-level archival storage classes. The backup tier is designed for fast, daily backups and enables instant restores - ideal for day-to-day operations. The archive tier, by contrast, offers a cost-efficient solution for long-term data retention and sustainably relieves primary storage. By combining Brik, RCV, and NCD, Vista has sharply reduced its hardware footprint and shifted capacity to the Swiss Azure region, ensuring all data complies with local data-protection requirements.

Orchestrated Recovery: Automated tests for the worst-case scenario

Rubrik Enterprise Edition includes an orchestrated recovery capability that automates the creation of recovery plans and tests them regularly. Vista now performs scheduled recovery tests that are automatically executed and logged in isolated environments. Thanks to these orchestrated recovery tests, it’s always possible to demonstrate that a recovery would run flawlessly. The tests can be automated to start at any time and, once completed, fully rolled back - requiring little to no manual intervention. This eases the burden on the IT team and builds confidence in the systems’ recoverability. Rubrik also generates audit reports that simplify compliance verification. With Rubrik, Vista has reduced its overall recovery time from several weeks to less than 48 hours while also centralizing management.
